Fundamentals of a CATV Broadband System

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed for a CATV technician or installer working in the complex
Cable TV environment. To be effective an expanded repertoire of knowledge
and skills is essential to provide effective customer service. With this in mind the
course will offer a thorough grounding of the principles of a CATV Broadband
Network with some practical equipment operating in a classroom environment.
Some "hands on" sessions will serve to bring about a better understanding of the
concepts presented, using appropriate test equipment.

The implications of new technologies as well as changes in system architecture
will be discussed, and techniques used to maintain subscriber system integrity
will be fully explored.

This course will serve as an excellent review for the seasoned veteran as well as
an invaluable reference for the less experienced technician.

  • System architecture: brief history, signal acquisition
  • CRTC and Regulatory requirements
  • The Television signal, yesterday, today, and tomorrow
  • New television formats available to the consumer
  • Spectrum allocation now and in the future
  • The changing CATV network
  • The decibel and simple mathematics suitable for CATV technicians
  • Signal Transmission principles and importance of “doing it right”
  • Understanding Cable Losses and applicable simple calculations
  • Passive devices, losses and effects on the network
  • Basic understanding CATV Line Amplifiers and Drop Amplifiers and how and why they work
  • Powering considerations, both the network and the customer
  • Identifying and understanding Signal impairments: ingression, hum, snowy pictures, pixellization etc.
  • New technologies and their impact on the industry and the consumer
  • The Digital Set-top Box, and interfacing issues
  • Utilization of relevant test equipment (TDR, VOM, SLM etc.)
  • CATV Digital concepts for internet and telephony simplified
